When buying a diamond remember the 4-C's; Cut, Clarity, Carat and Color.
SHAPE: Round, Marquise, Pear, Heart, Oval, Emerald, Princess
CUT: The cut of a diamond is its most important characteristic. The sparkle of a well-cut diamond can make it appear larger than you'd expect. Newport Jewelers recommends the highest cut grade, which will produce a brilliance that is beautiful. While many refer to cut and shape synonomously, it is the cut that determines the light return to the diamond, producing its sparkle.
CARAT: This is a term that commonly is referred to as the weight of a diamond. There are two things to consider when choosing a diamond; the distance in millimeters across the top of the diamond, and the diamonds cut grade. A more brillant well cut diamond that is .95 carats may appear larger than a poorly cut 1 carat diamond.
CLARITY: Simply put, clarity is a measure of the size and number of tiny imperfections that occur in almost all diamonds. IF free from internal blemishes visible under 10x magnification (small external details tolerated); VVS, VVS1, VVS2 inclusion and/or external blemishes very difficult to locate under 10x magnification; VS, VS1, VS2 inclusions and external blemishes difficult to locate under 10x magnification; SI, SI1, SI2, SI3 inclusions and external blemishes easy to locate under 10x magnification; I, I1, I2, I3 medium or large inclusions or external blemishes which are usually obvious to the naked eye under favorable lighting conditions
COLOR: D-F stones are colorless; G-J stones are near colorless; K-M slightly tinted; N-R very light yellow; S-Z light yellow to yellow
